Walton, Robert B. (Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories, Rahway, N.J.) and Edward L. Rickes. Reversal of the antibiotic, bacillin, by N-acetylglucosamine. J. Bacteriol. 84:1148-1151. 1962.-Antibacillin, previously shown to reverse the antibiotic action of bacillin, was isolated from powdered milk and identified as N-acetylglucosamine, a substance that is present in almost all microbial and animal cells.

Feast or famine: the global regulator DasR links nutrient stress to antibiotic production by Streptomyces.

Members of the soil-dwelling prokaryotic genus Streptomyces produce many secondary metabolites, including antibiotics and anti-tumour agents. Their formation is coupled with the onset of development, which is triggered by the nutrient status of the habitat. We propose the first complete signalling cascade from nutrient sensing to development and antibiotic biosynthesis. We show that a high conc...

Isolation and characterization of a phosphonomycin-resistant mutant of Escherichia coli K-12.

A mutant was isolated from Escherichia coli K-12 which showed increased resistance towards phosphonomycin, a new bactericidal antibiotic recently isolated from strains of Streptomyces. Evidence is presented which suggests that this mutant is resistant to lysis by phosphonomycin because of a lower affinity of phosphoenolpyruvate: uridine diphospho-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase for ...

Fosfomycin resistance in Escherichia coli in Japan.

Fosfomycin, [L-(cis)-1, 2-epoxypropyl phosphonic acid] (FOM), a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by some strains of Streptomyces species1), acts as a phosphoenolpyruvate analog and irreversibly inhibits phosphoenolpyruvate UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDPG1cNAc)-3-O-enolpyruvyl transferase, an enzyme which catalyzes the first step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis2). FOM enters susceptible bacteria b...

A new dipeptide antibiotic from Streptomyces collinus, Lindenbein.

Screening of a new strain of Streptomyces collinus, Lindenbein, A 19006, against Salmonella gallinarum led to the isolation of a new antibiotic. Examination of physical data and identification of hydrolysis products permitted the identification of this new metabolite as fumarylcarboxyamido-L-2,3-diaminopropionyl-L-alanine (I). The Gram-negative activity of the new antibiotic is inhibited by D-g...
